The Side Yards
The first areas as a whole that I will show you are the two side yards. The first side I am going to show you gets sun most of the day except for the very early morning. It also is the hardest to keep watered because it is kinda sloped from the front yard and it lands at the back of the backyard. The only thing planted as of now is a Trachycarpus fortunei, Windmill Palm.
This Windmill is the one that finally hit it’s stride last year in Florida putting out a ton of fronds all year. Of course planted in a new spot it hasn’t even opened the one frond that it started to push out last winter in Florida. The trunk has gotten a ton fatter which I guess I can take as a good thing.

I can’t wait to see what the view will look like in a few years.
The other side gets the morning sun and then gets shaded in the afternoon. I have an Aucuba planted and it does seem to be getting sunburned which is unfortunate.
The Banana Corner
This is the Chinese Yellow Banana. I have never had it do this well in Florida and I think maybe yet again I wasn’t able to keep it’s water needs in check down there. It is even putting out a ton of babies which is exciting.
This is the Coontie Palm that I got from Walmart earlier in June. It id doing well and already had a flush of new fronds. It is now underneath the Bananas which were much smaller when I planted the Coontie. That is of course poor planning on my part but it doesn’t seem to mind much as of right now.

it’s coming right along…keeping things watered is a challenge here in fl.
I know that, haha. Everyone should have to garden in Florida and then go and do it somewhere else. It makes the task at hand seem much simpler.

Looking good! My garden looked like that a couple of years ago too. The windmill palm and musella lasiocarpa are good choices! It looks lie your holly fern and hostas might be getting too much sun, but I’m sure that there will be more of that in time. The coontie is one of my favorites and I’ve started some from seed myself. Congrats on starting a magnolia seedling! Not too many other gardeners have the patience, so its nice to see that someone’s being adventurous.
Thank you! I think that side of the yard with the majority of the plants does see a lot more sun then what I saw when I planted everything back in April. As the sun is now going to start setting earlier I hope for it to get back to looking okay. Guess we shall see.
I want to say that the Big-Leaved Magnolia seedling is going to soon be a year old either this month or August. It wasn’t easy to germinate at all. I had five seeds and I planted all of them but one and they all rotted. I finally put the one you see today expecting it to do the same but it actually germinated and has been growing ever since.
