Before & After

4 August, 2011 Leave a comment

Okay, so I am moving and it was totally unexpected. It is just to another house, but still annoying. I put all this work into this side yard and I am just happy to see that it looked awesome. I have moved most of my plant to the new house and will have future updates from there.

Weather Data

28 July, 2011 Leave a comment

I recently rediscovered historical weather data for Lexington, KY that I had. It runs from winter 1947-1948 to winter 2010-2011.

In this data set the coldest minimum low for any winter has occurred twice. The first time was during the winter of 1962-1963 on January 24, 1963 and the second time was during the winter of 1993-1994 on January 19, 1994. The low both times was -20f.

The warmest minimum low occured druing the winter of 1952-1953 on January 6, 1953 with a low of 14f.

The following months below show how many times the minnium low has occured during that month. This includes if the low was reached multiple times during a month.:

November:… 0

December:… 9

The most times a minnium low has occurred more than once during a month was during the winter of 1947-1948. The low of -2 was hit on January 18, 24, 25, and 28.

Here are the following 10 year averages:

1950’s: -1.2f

1960’s: -6.4f

1970’s: -1.3f

1980’s: -4.3f

1990’s: -0.8f

2000’s: +1.5f

The winter 1947-1948 to 2010-2011 63 year average is: -1.3f.

The average from 2000-2001 t0 2010-2011 so far is: +1.3f

Chances Of Survival?

21 March, 2011 5 comments

So, I was finally able to get otuside and take some pictures of my palm tree’s and Loquat. I have no problem showing damage that has occured to my plants. Keep in mind most of these plants looked okay up until about a month ago and that is about when they had their spears pull(talking about the trachy’s here). I would just like to see what you guys think on their survival. These palms had no protection and saw a minimum low of 2f.

Needle Palm

Sabal minor #1

Windmill Palm #1

Windmill #2

Sabal Brazoria

Sabal minor #2

What do you think their chances of recovery are? What do you think I could do to help the recovery along? I will defintely be protecting next year, whether it is for these plants recovered or new ones.

After The Near Meltdown

6 August, 2010 2 comments

Seriously, I have new pictures I just have to post them. It took me a while to get the pics since we nearly melted here in Lexington. Wednesday was the hottest day of the summer with a high of 97f. It felt like 115f outside and we possibly could have went much higher had storm clouds not invaded the sky. No rain here of course cause Lexington’s Snow Dome has decided to block rain during the this summer. Storms and rain are literally breaking up has they reach the Lexington area and going north and south. At times the rain seems to reconnect after it passes Lexington. Annoying.

The tropicals are loving it; Castor Bean, Palms, Bananas and Elephant Ear’s.

Just so you don’t think I am crazy I just wanted to let you know that I posted the weather summaries because I failed to do so when I should have and I wanted them to show as a record on here, this blog. I do have picture updates on my landscape as soon as I can put the pictures on my computer. As of now I am waiting to clean up my computer because currently I have no space to put the pictures on my computer to do any updates at all.

Forgive Me

27 June, 2010 Leave a comment

Please forgive my absence. I have everything planted but just haven’t taken the time to take any pictures. I hope to get all of that done this week and have some post on here again. I can’t believe April 5 was the last time I wrote on here.  IN all honesty the plants are just starting to look good.
